The BC Elversberg team was crowned champion on the final day of the competition

ELVERSBERG - The BC Elversberg team has conquered the championship in the German bundesliga. The Saarland foursome closed the season as the new champion ahead of BC Munich with equal points. BCC Witten finished three points down of the champion. The showdown of an exciting season took place in the final weekend. BC Elversberg defeated Magdeburg 8-0 on Saturday and BCC Witten on Sunday 7-1. These were the four golden points, bringing the team the championship.

The championship was partly decided by a penalty, which was given to BC Munich after a protest of BC Magdeburg regarding the first match of the season. The German rules state that each team must be present with all players at 14.00 every Saturday afternoon and 11.00 on Sunday morning. For the match of Münich against Magdeburg, Johann Schirmbrand was not present on time. The excuse of BC Munich and Johann Schirmbrand were that the train had a delay. The home club, that didn't believe the excuse, asked for a note from the railways. BC Munich refused that or couldn't prove that it was the reason for Schirmbrand's delay.

Two days after the match, BC Magdeburg send a protest to the federation. The penalty was that BC Münich could lose two points. On the other hand, Münich has been protested twice during the season. That made that the punishment was only pronounced five days before the end of the competition. The two penalty points mean that Münich lost the leading position and Elversberg took the championship.

BC Elversberg played in the last weekend with Frédéric Caudron as the number one player on Saturday and with Jean Paul de Bruijn on Sunday. Caudron defeated Dion Nelin 40-29 in 15 innings, De Bruijn bested Eddy Leppens 40-27 in 17. Jef Philipoom also scored two victories for the champion: against Savas Bulut and Markus Schönhoff. On Sunday, Elversberg played in the line-up with De Bruijn, Philipoom, Bosel and Marx.

Christian Rudolph was the best man in the final weekend with wins in 14 and 15 innings. Dick Jaspers, who didn't play on Saturday, was again the leading player for Magdeburg on Sunday against Gladbach, with Torbjörn Blomdahl. The Swede led 34-18 in 13 and finished at 40-31. Jaspers scored seven points from the spots: 40-38.
