HERSTAL - The final day at the Belgian Cup promises to turn into a big battle between the four top guns of three cushion in the best billiard country in the world. Frédéric Caudron and Eddy Merckx, the world's numbers one and two, face each other in the semi-finals this morning (Sunday) at 11.00. The other semi-final is between Eddy Leppens and Roland Forthomme. The tournament will be played at LaFabrik in Herstal. The matches are broadcast live by Kozoom.
Frédéric Caudron was superior on the first day of the preliminaries, Eddy Merckx and Eddy Leppens shone on the second day. Merckx won his matches against Peter Ceulemans, Marc Roofthooft and Davy van Havere winning all his sets with averages of 2.000, 2.272 and 2.368, Leppens defeated Frank de Groof (2.500), Steven van Acker (2-1, 1.000) and Jef Philipoom in an exciting fight that equalled until2-2 in sets. In the third and deciding set, Leppens ruled and won 15-1.
Jef Philipoom was strong in the first round against Frédéric Mottet (2-0, 1.666) and had a tough opponent to Francis Forton. Philipoom proved to be the strongest with 2-1, Forton had a slightly higher average: 1.619 against 1.545.
The semi-finals are this morning at 11.00, followed by the matches for the fifth until eighth place. Jef Philipoom and Bart Leys play for place 5 and 6, Ronny Brants and Davy van Havere for place 7 and 8.
The final and the competition for the 3rd and 4th place are at 14.30.
