Hague player Martien van der Spoel best winner in double weekend

OOSTERHOUT/SLUISKIL - The Dutch league for three cushion teams was like a pinball machine this weekend with constantly turning tables. SIS Schoonmaak came down as the winner and leader after the double weekend, but all pursuers are very close in the ranking. The Hague team, the number 1, faced the number 2, Dallinga, on Saturday in a fantasy line-up. Caudron and De Bruijn were missing, because they played an exhibition in a cafe not so far away. The top match in Holland therefore was a farce. The Hague team won 6-2 and also won its match on Sunday.

Peter Ceulemans and Barry van Beers played the most capricious game: the match started with 22-0 and 27-2 for the Brabant player and ended with 40-33 for the Belgian. Another spectacular ending was seen in Sluiskil: Dallinga was on its way to a loss against Bousema, but escaped in an amazing final sprint with a 6-2 win. Martien van der Spoel, player of SIS Schoonmaak, was the best player in this double weekend.

SIS Schoonmaak is deservedly in the lead with two points ahead of HCR Prinsen and Dallinga. Eddy Merckx was superior to his predecessor as the leading Hague player Glenn Hofman, whom Merckx outplayed 40-18 in 17 after 33-8 in 8 innings with runs of 13 and 9. Martien van der Spoel's victory over Frank Martens was even better: 40-21 in 15 innings.

The scenario of this match day was constantly changing. HCR Prinsen faced a 4-0 deficit against 't Ivoor at the break due to the loss of Blomdahl against Jäschke (40-34 in 25) and Pijl against Van Peer (40-29 in 30), but Dick Jaspers, after a difficult start, and Anno de Kleine tied the score after the break against Christiani and Roofthooft.

The finish at Hotel Dallinga, where the home team played in its best line-up now against Bousema, was fascinating. Johan Loncelle and Frans van Schaik were very close to a 6-2 win for the team against Frédéric Caudron and Steven van Acker. The outcome, however, was completely different: the two Bousema players, lost their control because of the stress, missed chance after chance and were punished at the finish. Caudron, who was behind the whole match against Loncelle, took the win with 5 and 2, Van Acker with a beautiful run of 8. The scoreboard in both matches: 40-39 for the home players.

Other notable matches:

x Dustin Jäschke excelled with a win over Torbjörn Blomdahl: 40-34 in 25
X Ismail Yasin won against Jean van Erp, who suffered his second loss in a weekend: 40-37 in 26.
X Frans van Kuyk had a flying start against Roland Forthomme with 15-3 in 3 and 21-9 in 8 and won 40-37 in 23
X Jerry Hermans was ruthless on Sunday for Saturday's great player, Sam van Etten: 40-13 in 26
x Gerwin Valentijn and Ronny Lindemann were balanced at the finish line after a nice match: 40-40 in 25.

The most curious match was the Peter Ceulemans-Barry van Beers match. Ceulemans explained afterwards: ''I was 20-0 behind at the break and some innings later 27-2. How strange was the score in the second part, after the break, when Barry started to miss and miss and I could play an all-or-nothing game. My thought was: I will never win that match. But we came together around 32. And when I made a run of 9 towards the end, I suddenly started to believe in winning this incredible match. And yes it happened: one of the most bizarre games I have ever won."

Team Eekhoorn therefore won against Zundert 6-2. Dekker Keukens made an attempt to get away from the lower regions and won 5-3 against A1 Biljarts. 's Lands Welvaren pushed DKM Tools even more firmly in last place by winning the mutual match 6-2.
