Frédéric Caudron had a majestic start in the Challenge

MALLE - The start of the Kozoom Challenge, today in De Salpho in Malle, was for Frédéric Caudron both impressive and surprising: the Belgian put his feared opponent Jean Paul de Bruijn in the 1500 points battle with his back against the wall. He flaunted with a majestic start and had a more than 200 points lead (315-104) after two sessions. Caudron closed the day (three sessions) at 450-326.

The 46-year-old Belgian, who married this week in the setting of this match to Jessica SuKyung Yeo, came to the duel with his three years older opponent with the reputation from a previous marathon match. In the Juanjo Trilles Challenge in Spain, two years ago, he defeated Dick Jaspers in a match to 600 caroms in three cushion 600-501 and he was in eight of ten sessions the better player.

In the first sessions of the Kozoom Challenge, he showed himself mentally the better starter. Caudron dominated ten innings, and was able to limit the damage after a lesser period.

Jean Paul de Bruijn suffered a poor start and only found his rhythm at the end of the evening with a wonderful run of 73. He will undoubtedly demonstrate his high class in this discipline in the next two days, but in two sessions he couldn't show his strongest weapons: his amazing technique in the high runs.

Caudron thanked his early lead in the match primarily to a run of 109 in the fourth inning, closed in the opening session on 150-19 and then continued from the position in which he stopped his run at 100. The second session also showed Caudron's superiority: he went into the second break with a run of 36 and 300-104 on the scoreboard. And starting the third, he ran out to 315-104.

De Bruijn got some chances to fight back in the last of three sessions, but couldn't impress again, even when Caudron had a hick-up in that part of the match, scoring only sixteen times in seven innings from the 13th to the 19th. Moreover, Caudron missed in an ideal position in the 20th inning, playing a bankshot just a little too soft. Still he maintained his advantage with 22 and 25 and kept the margin over 200 (395-187).

De Bruijn had his peak on this first day on a score of 434-253, when he had a highest run of 38 in 29 innings on the scoreboard. The spectators finally saw the Dutchman's amazing qualities, scoring 73. He missed unfortunately in a position on the short rail. As a result, he came back to 326 in the thirteenth inning, giving Caudron the chance to finish with sixteen: 450-326.

The averages are not so impressive after Caudron's strong start. The Belgian has 15.03, De Bruijn 10.87. Caudron has a maximum run of 109, De Bruijn scored 73.

Tomorrow, Saturday, the sessions are at 11.00, 15.00, 17.00 and 21.00.
