Frank Martens was the best player in the 18th round of the Buffalo League

ZUNDERT/HAARLO - The numbers one and two in the Buffalo League 3-cushion league look certain of a spot in the play-offs, and could even afford a misstep. The leade, SIS Schoonmaak, already made one today, allowing HCR Prinsen to close the gap to a single point.

More interesting is the battle for third, the last postion in the play-off. Five teams are only one point apart and an exciting conclusion to the season is ahead. DPC from Vlaardingen made a jump to third in a share with L&B Ledermode and Team Eekhoorn. Frank Martens from 't Hartje van Wanrooy was the best winner of the day, scoring 40 in 15 innings.

The race for first place is far from over, especially after this 18th round. SIS Schoonmaak lost their away game in Zundert (6-2) and will be host to HCR Prinsen next week. That encounter has been all the talk in Cafe Jorissen in The Hague for weeks now.  ,,We expect a packed house, 150 people, and an incredible ambiance.'' But have they maybe focused on that match too much, and forgotten to deal with today's tricky opponents of STZ?

In the first session of that meeting, with Jeffrey Jorissen beating  Raymon Groot (40-33 in 37) and Barry van Beers getting the better of  Raymond Burgman (40-37 in 25), things looked O.K. with a 2-2. But the second session was all STZ. Roland Forthomme stayed miles ahead of  Glenn Hofman (40-23 in 17) and Peter Ceulemans closed the door on SIS with a comfortable win over Jean van Erp: 40-18 in 16.

The only competitor fort he top spot, HCR Prinsen, capitalized on this golden opportunity. Three victories, by Dick Jaspers (19 innings), Anno de Kleine (28) and Jelle Pijl (27) were good enough to beat De Veemarkt 6-2. Raymund Swertz was bested by a surprsingly strong René Dericks, best known as an artistic player. The lead of SIS shrank to one point, and the top position is up for grabs in the upcoming four rounds.

The second echelon is closer together than ever. Three teams (DPC, L&B Ledermode and Team Eekhoorn) are on 20 points in a share of third. Zundert and Dallinga are by no means out of it, with 19 points. DPC recovered from a few lesser rounds and beat A1 Biljarts 6-2. The team from Vlaardingen recorded an impressive team average of 1.876, and the losing team's 1.506 was not bad either. Birol Uymaz (a win in 16 innings) and Richard Bitalis made runs of 12, Martien van der Spoel (A1) made a 15. Kay de Zwart lost his match to Cédric Melnytschenko (40-33 in 22), but he did produce two good runs (11 and 9) back to back.

L&B Ledermode and Team Eekhoorn both lost a point. The team from Hoeven could not beat 't Hartje, because Harrie van de Ven won his match against Gerwin Valentijn and Frank Martens excelled with top performance to beat John Tijssens in 15. Team Eekhoorn shared with  Bousema Lochem. The Galla-brothers both won their matches, beating  Kurt Ceulemans and Jerry Hermans. Martin Horn was a poor leading player for Bousema, he had no chance against Frans van Kuyk: 40-24 in 28.

The German was not the only lead player who underperformed. Dustin Jäschke only made 13 points against Dick Jaspers, Hakan Incekara got as far as 15 against Merckx, and Jean Paul de Bruijn made 21 in 25 for Dallinga. The player from Zeeland, playing Thorsten Frings, was the worst of his team, average-wise. Raymond Ceulemans and Berry Dallinga made 40 in 40, Steven van Acker did better with 40 in 25. With a 6-2, de Bruijn's loss was without consequence. Dallinga is on a positive run and a seventh place gives them some hope.

The current Buffalo League table:
1 SIS Schoonmaak 18-30
2 HCR Prinsen 18-29
3 DPC 18-20
4 L&B Ledermode 18-20
5 Team Eekhoorn 18-20
6 STZ Zundert 18-19
7 Dallinga.com 18-19
8 A1 Biljart 18-16
9 Bousema Lochem 18-15
10 't Hartje/Van Wanrooy 18-14
11 De Veemarkt 18-11
12 MCR 18-3.

Three rounds before the end of regular play, Burgmans Biljarts has already secured the title and the promotion in the second league. The team from Brabant will return tot he first division, after a year's absence. The deciding win was booked by Marco Janssen, Bart Ceulemans, Johan Roijers and Bert van Manen.

In the other second division flight, Aardexpress has the lead (30 from 19), followed by Man op Maat/'t Caves with 28 from 19.
