MADRID - The sixteen players in the main tournament of the Open Madrid kicked off for the final phase today (Saturday). Dani Sánchez already demonstrated in the first knockout round that he is the huge favorite. The multiple Spanish title holder started with a comfortable win against Valentin Andaluz Antón 40-4 in 12 innings (3.333 average).
Other Spanish fixtures who shared among the top sixteen are Javi Palazón, who defeated Javier Gimeno (40-14 in 23), Adrián Legazpi and Rafa Garrido who won their matches in 28 innings .
The biggest surprise came from Valentine Andaluz Blázques: the Andaluz guy outplayed Ruben Legazpi, the finalist at the World Cup in Peloponnese, who trailed 40-28 in 21 at the end. Blázques recorded the second best average in the 1/16 finals (1.905).
Two matches were decided by one carom. Rubén Fernández knocked down young David Zapata 40-39 in 46 and Jesus Jimenez won the final sprint against Jordi Martí (40-39 in 39). Carlos Crespo was eliminated in a fascinating duel by Xavier Yeste .
