HALLE-ZOERSEL - The team boss Ludo Dielis honestly admitted: ,,We never expected that we would take this title in the end rush.'' His team BC Deurne, in its strongest line-up, won the last match against BC De Ploeg on Tuesday night and was rewarded with the tenth title in the history of BC Deurne. In the final weeks of the competition, De Goeie Queue made an unexpected misstep, therefore BC Deurne was suddenly in the picture for a new title. And so, Torbjörn Blomdahl, Jef Philipoom, Jean van Erp and Davy van Havere were the happy winners on the final day.

The start of the last match in De Ploeg was not that good. Ludo Dielis: ,,We led 4-0 at the break, but we could have been 4-0 down.'' Jean van Erp was 23-17 behindin his match against Danny Geysen, but then turned the game around with runs of 9, 5 and 4 for a final score 42-36 in 26 innings. Davy van Havere still looked at a small margin 27-30 against Eddy Willems, but grabbed the win with small runs. Then, in the second part, it was up to the team leaders to finish it off. Blomdahl and Philipoom needed at least one point against Klompenhouwer and Wijnen.

Halfway, there was still a certain balance in these matches. Blomdahl trailed 18-13 against Klompenhouwer in 17 innings and Philipoom-Wijnen was 19-19 after 12 innings. But eventually, the job was done smoothly. The leaders signed up for an 8-0 victory. Philipoom prevailed 50-34 in 27, Blomdahl 50-40 in 31 after an equalizer with five from Klompenhouwer.

,,We go for a beer now'', said Dielis. ,,And maybe we will celebrate it in our home in Deurne in a few weeks.'' Jean van Erp: ,,It's just a small party, but of course we are happy.'' Ludo Dielis: ,,We all thought, four, five weeks ago, that the title was gone and we played for the second place. That changed suddenly when De Goeie Queue unexpectedly lost the leading position. We have benefited, although we had a poor start on the final day.''

The team boss announced, on the eve of the championship, the team for next season. Glenn Hofman, the leading player at De Witte Molen, will joint the Deurne team and will probably be the new leader. The line-up will generally consist of Glenn Hofman, Jef Philipoom, Jean van Erp and Davy van Havere.

,,I had a talk before with Blomdahl and we agreed that he still will be available for our team. I think for three to five times a year. He will be more in Korea, so he can't play many matches for us. As a solid reserve for the first position, Blomdahl will probably play occasionally, maybe against the main competitors.''

According to Dielis, there was never spoken about Dick Jaspers coming to Deurne. Those were only rumors. ,,Three players called me that they want to come to us. We had to choose between those three. The sponsors wanted Glenn Hofman. I think because of his youth.''
