The Masters podium with Dick Jaspers in the middle

KAATSHEUVEL - The final of the Masters, an encounter between Dick Jaspers and Jean Paul de Bruijn, turned out to be a worthy climax of of the championship. The most deserving player climbed the highest podium: Dick Jaspers has regained his title. The fifteen-now sixteen-fold Master has added another gold to his collection.

His supremacy in the tournament translated into a victory in the final against Jean Paul de Bruijn. That match did not take off very well (12-8 in 11 innings), but the majestic second half made it a fitting crown on the event.

Jaspers launched his attack with a run of fourteen (highest of the tournament, shared with Jean van Erp) in the twelfth inning. De Bruijn hit back with 6, 4, 7 and 4, but another scoring spree by Jaspers seemed to seal his fate (48-29).

The captivated audience may not have expected an exciting finish anymore, but they got one. The title holder from Zeeland bravely gave his all, scoring 7, 7 and 4 op to make it 49-47. Jaspers then finished the match with a precise shot: 50-47 in 21 (2.381/2.238).
The star player from day one all the way to day four, with a 2.000 average up to the final and 2.063 in total, celebrated his victory.

,,I may deserve it, you know'', he said mildly modest. ,,The averages always speak to my advantage, but not just internationally, in the Netherlands too many more players stand up who can play on a very high level.''

The Dutch title was this year's first highlight, from now on his focus is back on the World Cups. ,,That is where a top player wants to perform well, to see where he stands internationally.''

Jean Paul de Bruijn was his strongest rival in the Masters, also the closest to him in average (2.063/1.596). The stylish player from Zeeland almost performed a miracle in the final, but in hindsight was beaten on one single defining moment. ,,I missed because of a kick, and Dick took full advantage with that run of fourteen. It looked like the killing blow, but the champion of the past year had the class it took to stage a comeback.

Jean van Erp and Jeffrey Jorissen shared the rostrum with the finalists. Van Erp is very used to that position, Jorissen was there for the first time. His swift development was one of the good things this championship brought.

Barry van Beers and Harrie van de Ven lived up to expectations. Both guys from Brabant missed out on the semifinals, but especially van Beers performed well average-wise: 1.540.

Dave Christiani, Therese Klompenhouwer, Raimond Burgman and Glenn Hofman had a disappointing tournament.

Dick Jaspers and Jean van Erp shared the high run prize, Dick Jaspers played a 40 in 13, which was the shortest match.
The final standing has no consequences for the WC National teams in Viersen. The ranking after four GP tournaments will decide about that.

Dick Jaspers and Barry van Beers will certainly form Netherlands A. If there will be a Netherlands B, Raimond Burgman and Glenn Hofman will be the players.
