PORTO - The Dutch team SIS Schoonmaak has already qualified for the final rounds at the European Cup three cushion for club teams. In the five other groups, today, Friday, will be decided which team will finish as group winner and best runner-up. FC Porto is the eighth team in the finals, seeded as the title holder. The final group stage brings the 24 teams (96 players) once again in the FC Porto arena.
The 'Hague team SIS Schoonmaak with Glenn Hoffman, Jean van Erp, Raimond Burgman and Jeffrey Jorissen also took his second match with an 8-0 score and are the only team still undefeated. Jean van Erp was the best winner in his team in a match against Portuguese Escudeiro, 40-20 in 22 innings. In the final pre-round, SIS plays against BC Deurne, that lost its two matches, but in which good-old Ludo Dielis is unbeaten after two matches.
The other front runners in the groups are Mecidiyeköy SK, Tekstil BSK, Varde BK, CB Paiporta and BK Gröndal. Almost certainly in the finals are the Spaniards of Paiporta, that can secure the group win against Elversberg. Two contenders for a podium place, the Danes of Gröndal and the French of La Baule, meet today for the decisive duel, in which Gröndal can afford a 4-4.
The Danes defeated in the group of death Cartagena 6-2. Dion Nelin was the best winner in his team against Jose Antonio Carrasco (40-33 in 20). David Martinez excelled against Jacob Sörensen in a one-way-match: 40-9 in 22). How the teams were matched together, shows the final score. Cartagena achieved 1.511 as team average, Gröndal 1.465.
Other notable matches were the draw of Eddy Merckx and Rubén Legazpi (40-40 in 19), the victory of Tayfun Tasdemir over Andreas Horvath (40-17 in 19) and Ahmet who beat the Swiss Behzat Cetin 40-8 in 20.
