Eddy Merckx flutters on a pink clowd against Forthomme

DEURNE - The World championship is only three weeks away and Eddy Merckx little by little is growing to his highest level. The 41 year old Belgian yesterday evening beat his two year younger compatriot in a sparkling match. Merckx finished in only 16 innings, Forthomme ended on 43 points: Merckx averaged 3.125 with a run of 14, Forthomme finished on 2.687 with a run of 12. It was the best match of the fourth round.

The session was marked by surprising results on the top. The three leaders after three rounds, KBC Zanzibar, Quality Zele and De Ploeg, all lost their matches. BC Geox Herentals and Mister 100 Lier are the new leaders.

Mister 100 played a very regular match against BC De Ploeg. Peter Ceulemans lost 50-38 (35 innings) against Martin Horn, the three other players from the team grapped the win: Kurt Ceulemans against Allan Jensen, Raymond Ceulemans against Wesley de Jaeger and Koen Ceulemans against another member of the legendary family: Bart Ceulemans.

BC Geox Herentals, the other team with six points in four matches, larruped BC Quality Zele without any compassion. Peter de Backer was defeated by Dion Nelin (50-42 in 26), Jean Paul de Bruijn is almost a collector in defeats this year and also had no chance against Christian Rudolph (50-37 in 34), Patrick Kesteloot finished ten points behind Leon Smolders (42-32 in 34) and Mathieuw Vlerick lost his match against Geert Meylemans (42-39 in 38).

Martin Spoormans, on sunday in Sluiskil loser against Michael Nilsson, now glanced in Belgium in his match with Frédéric Caudron. The leader of BC Lugo Deurne beat the number one of the world 50-45 in 34 innings. Spoormans took the win by a decisive run of eight on three innings from the finish.

The outcome of all these results is that there are only two leaders now: BC Geox Herentals and Mister 100 Lier, five chasers (BC Lugo Deurne, BC Biljart Express, KBC Zanzibar, BC De Ploeg and Quality Zele) just are onie point behind. Kon. Eeklose BC and Op de Meir are on the bottom with one point.

Eddy Merckx and Roland Forthomme were the best of the fourth round on average. Frans van Kuyk, the sensationel player of last week with his run of 27, now beat Steven van Acker 50-31 in 25 innings. Good old Ludo Dielis was the player with the highest run: a 15 against Jimmy Mues. Henk Blauwblomme made a 14 for Kon. Kortrijkse in his match against Kees Wittens.
