FEHRBACH - The Belgian Eddy Merckx has played a fabulous new world record in the bundesliga. In his match for BSG Duisburg, with which team he played in the billiard room of BFR Fehrbach, Merckx demonstrated his high class and made the 50 caroms in 6 innings. The old world record was on the name of Torbjörn Blomdahl, Frédéric Caudron and Marco Zanetti in nine innings.
As the leader of his team Eddy Merckx played against the Korean Won Kang In, who could only watch the master from his chair and lost 50-6. The match was played in the billiard room of BFR Fehrbach, where fifty spectators witnessed the best match ever played in three-cushion.
Eddy Merckx started from the break-off with 4, then made 9, 26, 7, 0 and 4. The run of 26 was the highest in his career so far. His highest until today was 21, he made it last year in St. Truiden.
The Belgian plays in Germany for the team of BSG Duisburg already for 22 years, most of the time with Hans-Jürgen Kühl as team mate. ,,We just try just to survive in the Bundesliga every year, I play only five or six matches for the competition.''
Today BSG Duisburg defeated the home club of BFR Fehrbach 6-2. Dieter Grossjung and Carsten Raspel were the other two winners for Duisburg.
The Belgian former world record felt himself still on a pink cloud hours after his brilliant match. ,,For me something happened, that hung in the air for a few weeks'', he said. ,,I walked around with a lot of frustration, which I only have entrusted to Nicky Verlinden, a good friend, who also was with me today. He knew how I felt after the last World Cup tournaments, in which I was eliminated very quickly. I always played well in training, felt strong, but in the tournaments I couldn't shine, sometimes because of my opponent who was very strong, sometimes because of some bad luck.''
,,I won the World Cup in Trabzon, but after that victory my frustration was growing. Today, I felt that something was hanging in the air. You could see that people in the billiard room felt that something great was going to happen'', said Merckx on his way home. May be some people have thought that Eddy Merckx was on his way back and couldn't find his big form anymore. I have showed them that they were wrong. Eddy Merckx is back on top, I'm so happy with this performance. I still had that wonderful feeling travelling home for four hours, tonight we sure will drink a good glass of beer in my house.''
