PORTO - The finale was not a real match, because FC Porto was by far the best team in the Portuguese team final. Dick Jaspers, Torbjörn Blomdahl, Rui Costa, Santos Oliveira and Joao Ferreira took the title after a walkover in the final against FC Leca (8-0). ,,We were ready to battle, but we had no chance at all'', was the comment in the losers camp.
FC Porto took the maximum score from four matches: eight match points and twenty match wins. The mastery from the team with a Dutchman, a Suede as best player in the tournament and three Portuguese players was clear, although FC Leca with Eddy Merckx, Jef Philipoom, Rui Américo and Pedro Martins kept pace until the final round with eight match points.
The final battle nevertheless gave a one-sided picture. Rui Costas took first win against Rui Américo (50-40) and Santos Oliveira against Pedro Martins (50-44). That was enough for FC Porto to win the title.
Dick Jaspers and Torbjörn Blomdahl gave the final more gloss with their victories. Dick Jaspers defeated Eddy Merckx 50-33 in 25 innings, Torbjörn Blomdahl won 50-33 against Jef Philipoom in 23 innings.
The Swede's match was the best of the entire tournament. FC Porto and FC Leca qualified for the preliminary rounds of the European Cup for club teams.
