World championship in Milan

MILAN - The Italian city of Milan is in preparation for the 22nd edition of the World championship 5 pins, starting today, September 17 until September 27th. The fad for this sport in Italy is not in relation to other European countries with 1145 players in the preliminary stages of this World championship.

The final phase with 32 players in the knockout will be held at the Palace Milan (Palacus Idroscalo) and broadcast on the final days by the Italian television channel RAI 2.

Thirteen countries are participating in the championship, including eleven Pan-American players from Argentina, Uruguay and the United States, one from Egypt and 28 European players. That means 40, joined by eight players from the qualification.

Among the contenders are the reigning Argentine champion Gustavo Torregiani, 2006 world champion and European champion, the Italian Aniello Michelangelo, Antonio La Manna (wild card organizer), 2008 world champion, Andrea Quarta, 2003 world champion, Crocefisso Maggio and the Pan-American champion Gustavo Longo. The UMB wildcard was donated to the American Julio Alberto Barrios.

Three Belgians, Martin Spoormans Peter Debaes and Yves Schiettecatte, are among the participants and also three French players: Matthew Hingant, Christophe Duvernoy and Cedric Tote.
