Glenn Hofman and Dick Jaspers, talking about their spectacular match

CALI - The shining star of the late night show was he, Glenn Hoffman, after his glorious win against Dick Jaspers. Just like Eddy Merckx, the world champion, in the last match of the day. ,,The people were crazy,'' said the Dutchman the day after the biggest success in his career.

Glenn: ,,I think there were about seven hundred people in the room and they all watched three cushion, not any attention for the two pool tables and the snooker table in the billiard room. And afterwards it was completely crazy out there. A hundred people were waiting for an autograph. The police had to stop them.''

But it was not an ordinary night: Glenn Hoffman defeated the title holder in a fantastic match, Eddy Merckx, who plays for the first time in Colombia. ,,I don’t care, all that craziness, but actually it is very special.''

Frits Bakker: You started very poor in the first match against Takeshima, but suddenly you were super against Jaspers.
Glenn Hoffman: ,,That happens most of the time to me, I have to grow in a tournament, very strange is that.''

FB: How was the start of the match against Dick, you ran out to 24-8, was it because of you created some good positions at the table?
GH: ,,I couldn’t complain about the positions, but there was no luck at all. A few times the balls were rolling in my favor. That always happens when you’re playing well. And Dick didn’t play bad either… with 24 in nine innings.''

FB: He suddenly came back with that run of sixteen after the break.
GH: ,,That run, oh yes, pff. He came from 24-8 to 24-24, scored another two and all of a sudden I was 26-24 behind. Then we started to play defensive, of course, like playing chess at the table.’’

FB: How was Dick during the match, did you see the tension?
GH: ,,He was more under more pressure than I, of course, that makes sense. And he was very disappointed afterwards, but also very sporty.''

FB: How did you finish in the last innings?
GH: ,,When the score was 37-33, I made two very good shots. That was decisive for the match. I really did not have a weak moment after his high run. I could happily respond well.''

FB: Today against Eddy Merckx, how do you see your chances?
GH: ,,I must play on my very best to have a little chance, of course. And if I lose, then I play for third place later tonight. But that's for later, first of all I’m gonna try to win this match.''
