Harry van de Ven will appeal against the suspension and penalty

BERGEIJK - The Dutch billiard player Harrie van de Ven has been suspended for eighteen months and a 700 euro penalty by the disciplinary committee of the ISR (Institute Sports Justice) in Amsterdam. The suspension is imposed after a positive doping test in a match in the Dutch league with his team Van Wanrooy. The control revealed that the player used a medicine in which was found a prohibited substance.

Harrie van de Ven himself first spoke about a blood pressure lowering agent, which he uses for many years and has been given on docter's prescription. In an explanation, the player later admitted that he used Metoprolol, he spoke about ,,a Beta Blocker'' that slows the heart rate and lowers the blood pressure. ,,I was unaware of any wrongdoing'', the Dutchman said, ,,because I was tested five years ago when I already used the medicine. Then, there was nothing to worry about.''

Harrie van de Ven wants to get rid of all the rumours about using drugs. ,,The doping test was during the league math with my team against A1. I told them to use a medicine for blood pressure. What didn't happen five years later, happened now: is was accused that a substance is found which is on the doping list. The charge is that I have been lax and should have known that it was forbidden.'' He emphasizes that the pills are taken on medical advice. ,,I tried three other blood pressure tablets before, then we started this.''

Perhaps, he says, I should have looked better at the doping list whether the medicine was allowed. ,,But I can't agree with a one and a half year suspension and a 700 euros penalty. I really hate athletes who use dope to get better in their sport. I certainly did not, I am completely innocent.''

The billiard player will definitely appeal against the suspension and penalty. He would play for De Vriendenkring De Distel this year in the second division and is a reserve for De Distel 1.

Bennie Deegens, chairman of the Section three cushions in the Netherlands, was not been informed about the suspension and had no contact with the player so far. ,, He had better waited to throw this news into the world.'' Deegens waits the further developments. ,We will support Harrie, of course, when he wants. But in fact, we are connected to the Wada (World Anti Doping Agency) and can't say: we will not suspend him.''
