Jean Paul de Bruijn, winner of three titles in Holland including the pentathlon.

HAARLO - The 45-year-old Jean Paul de Bruijn gained three national titles in the Dutch multi discipline championship. The major victory he achieved in the pentathlon after the deciding match with Dave Christiani. The former vice world champion in three cushion also grabbed the titles in the free game and one cushion.

De Dutch allrounder, who's season in three cushion is not pretty good, shone in almost all his performances in Haarlo. ,,I was not only the strongest in my favorite game type, the one cushion, but also felt well enough to duel with all my opponents in the other disciplines'', he said after the tournament. He finished as the overall winner in the pentathlon, but also as the best in the free game and the one cushion, in which discipline he won his ninth national title.

Martien van der Spoel showed himself the best in three-cushion with an average of 1.391. He finished with ten match points, two more than Dave Christiani, who took an average of 1.322 and Jean Paul de Bruijn with 1.136. Van der Spoel also was the champion in the 71 / 2. Michel van Silfhout was champion in the 47/2.

The denouement of the tournament took place in the match between Jean Paul de Bruijn and Dave Christiani. De Bruijn would be sure of the title with a draw over five disciplines. He tied in the free game (400-400 in two innings), won the 47/2 (250-12 in 3), the three-cushion (40-32 in 30) and one cushion 125-124 in 10). That last game was a thriller. Christiani missed at one carom of the finish, then De Bruijn took the win with one point.

Raymund Swerz won in the final round his last match against Michel Silfhout thanks to victories in the 71/2, three-cushion and one cushion.

The Dutch multi's, called the Inkada Grand Dutch, were played Hotel Prinsen in Haarlo. There, at the end of the tournament, the champions were honored. The overall win in three-cushion didn't point Martien van der Spoel as the new Dutch champion. For that title will be played later in the season in the Masters.
