Jean van Erp was the best in average.... with Cheqio?

VLAARDINGEN - What's going on with the Dutch billiard players, only ten days after they played the Masters for the Dutch title in Kaatsheuvel? The averages of the top players are suddenly sky rocketed. The Grand Prix in Vlaardingen started last night in the main tournament on a rarely high level. Masters-winner Jean van Erp won his preliminary round with 2.352 average (,,I've never played that in a tournament''), Dick Jaspers finished 2.142 after three matches and Raimond Burgman 1.967.

The reason for the sudden progression? ,,It's very clear for me'', explains Jean van Erp without hesitation. ,,I use the new concentration product Cheqio since the Masters. And it works fabulous for me. I don't say this because I won the Masters. My concentration was better than ever, even in the final and during the match against Jaspers. I felt no stress moments and my stroke was always very good under all circumstances. I never felt like this before.''

Jean van Erp thinks there's another reason for the extremely high level: it might be the Royal Pro cloth on the billiards in Vlaardingen. ,,It gives a very special feeling: the cue ball keeps its effect on the third cushion, even if you play softly. It gives you a better feeling, so far, very nice to play.''

Is it a coincidence, the huge difference with the level at the Masters?

The Masters: were Dick Jaspers, Jean van Erp and Raimond Burgman started with very moderate matches. Jaspers played in the group 40 points in 28, 27 and 21 innings. Van Erp started with 39, 44 and 27 innings, Burgman with 42, 28 and 20 innings.
In the Grand Prix, Jean van Erp defeated Sander Jonen last night in 16 innings (2.500), Frans van Schaik in 14 (2.857), Tom Beemsterboer in 21 (1.904).

Dick Jaspers did not so much worse than that. He finished in 15 innings against Albert Kooistra (2.666), against Wim van den Berg in 17 (2.352) and against Herman Slikker in 24 (1.666). The differences are remarkable, regarding the tournament start in Kaatsheuvel.

Jean van Erp, after his first trial with Cheqio, feels a totally different player, as he looks now: confident, with a great feeling and better concentrated in his matches than he ever was. ,,I believe in this product, what others may think of it, it's up to them. Maybe it's only a small tool to make you better as a player. I am open to it, as I did four years ago, when the Dutch federation suggested to visit a sports psychologist. I followed twelve sessions and won the next Grand Prix. We will never know if that was the reason, like now, but it's certainly remarkable that I feel so good at this moment.''

Two pills and a tin of the new product Cheqio during the days of the tournament... Is that the secret for the billiard player, or certainly for Jean van Erp and Jean Paul de Bruijn at the World championship in Korea?

,,I do not know how many players already tried'', says Jean van Erp. ,,But they are curious, most of them, though I still don't believe that a player like Raimond Burgman will start with Cheqio. He's a bit giggly about using it. Dick Jaspers? I don't know, and about other players I can't tell so far.''

Don't think that you suddenly become a top billiard player using Cheqio'', the Masters winner assures. ,,You still have to practice very hard, you need a lot of talent and have to play good. It's not the pill that makes you better. But I started from the principle: if it helps you just a little bit to get better, then it's worth to try it.''

With Jean van Erp, Dick Jaspers and Raimond Burgman the third group winner last night was Dave Christiani in the first round of the main tournament. Harrie van de Ven was eliminated in a nail-biter against Roland Uytdewilligen: 40-39 in 26 innings.

The final ranks in the first four groups:
