LOMMEL - There was no time for practice, because the summer is reserved for working in the casino. But still, without any preparation, Jef Philipoom was the best man on the first night in the Kimchi Superprestige in Lommel. In the tournament where he reached the final rounds so many times, the best known Belgian on this opening night was on track with three wins.

The best average was for Jef Philipoom (1.666), the highest run came from Frédéric Mottet (15), the best match from Steven van Acker, the second best who advanced for the quarterfinals on Friday night. The Eeklo player started promising (40-16 against Ronny Daniels in 19 innings), in the next round, Van Acker was beaten by later group winner Jef Philipoom (40-23 in 21).

,,I'm happy with my start," said Philipoom after his last performance. ,,My summer was very busy at work, so I wasn't able to do any practice.'' The schedule, however, was kind to the former 1995 world champion. Steven van Acker was a rival for the group win, Ronny Daniels and Frédéric Mottet missed the form and feeling to compete.

Mottet had one marvellous moment this evening. He came back from 19-6 down in his match against Daniels with a run of 15 (21-19) and then took the match in 28. Jef Philipoom won his matches in 21, 21 and 30 innings. Steven van Acker in 19 and 29. The match for the runner-up position (Van Acker-Mottet) was won by Van Acker 40-29.

The final ranking in Group A:
1 Jef Philipoom 6-1.666-11
2 Steven van Acker 4-1.492-7
3 Frédéric Mottet 2-1.137-15
4 Ronny Daniels 0-1.132-6.

Tonight (Tuesday), on the second evening, the group with Peter Ceulemans, Roland Forthomme, Davy van Havere and Ronny Brants comes to the tables starting at 18.00.

Jef Philipoom, superior group winner

Steven van Acker, runner-up for the final rounds

Frédéric Mottet, stunning run of 15, but out of the game after one night
