NEW YORK - In the weeks before the kick off in the Open Verhoeven at Carom Cafe in New York, a USBA handicap tournament was played. Luis Miguel was winner ahead of Loreano Gomez, Daniel Jeong and Song Lim.

More known players like Sonny Cho, Sang Jin Lee and Michael Kang were eliminated in the rounds before the semifinals. The final round was played with 64 players.

The group winners in qualifying in format with groups of four were:
Loreano Gomez (1.020), Jim Shovak (0.741), Lloyd Wallace (0.896), Ester Park (0.603), Johnny Alehandro (0.478), Cristobal Torres (0.852), Sang Jin Lee (1.483), Mike Lee (0.700), Jimmy Ekinci (0.500), Won Sik Kang (0.625), Sonny Cho (1.127), Ho Kyung Kil (0.762), Daniel Jeong (0.585), Jung Sik Kim (1.368), Brian Yi (1.043).

Sang Jin Lee (win against Jimmy Ruan, 35 in 33 innings) and Sonny Cho (beat Herman Nie, 40 in 33) were the stars of the first knockout round. Luis Miguel defeated Sang Jin Lee in the quarterfinals, Sonny Cho was switced off  by Song Lim.

In the semifinals Luis Miguel reached the final by a win against Daniel Jeong, Loreano Gomez outplayed Song Lim. Luis Miguel won the final against Gomez 22-26.

The prize fund for the top sixteen players 6300 US dollars: the number one received 2000, the number two 1100.

The 32 players were divided into 16 groups of four players, the top two finishers were qualified for the knockout.
