SLUISKIL - He dropped a few places on the world ranking this year, but Torbjorn Blomdahl is still a great master on the billiard table. The Swede gave the World championship this afternoon a great opening. His match against Ramon Hamm in Luxembourg lasted barely forty minutes, Blomdahl won with a formidable average: 3,750.
He needed only two innings for the first set (15-0, with a run of twelve), four for the second (15-7) and six innings for the third (15-4) with a run of eight.
It was the most spectacular match so far, but Blomdahl remained remarkably stoic. ,,I have predicted that at least twenty players can win this championship, but I must amend that statement. There are perhaps thirty candidates in this strong field of players.''
Eddy Merckx was with his run of fifteen in the first set against Alexander Salazar already a prominent player on day two of the tournament. The Belgian remained scoring unperturbed in the next two sets and finished with an average of 3,000.
Kim Kyung Roul won this round against Christoforou (3-0), Martin Horn against Pietro Piedra Buena (3-2). Luis Avila beat Tayfun Tasdemir 3-0.
