NEW YORK - The American three-cushion championship is halfway the preliminary rounds: eight players have the maximum score out of three matches. Miguel Torres leads the group in which Mazin Shooni surprisingly suffered two defeats in three matches. In the same group, Jamil Isreal started with six points in three matches.
Mazin Shooni has to recover very well if he want to catch up the top two after the losses against Sun Shin and Miguel Torres. Allen Castillo is the only player with three wins in Group B, where Jae Hyung Cho is the main competitor for the group win.
Pedro Piedrabuena and Young Gull Lee made a flawless start in Group C, where Michael Kang won two of his three matches. The Carom Cafe club owner lost against Piedrabuena (25-8).
Hugo Patino and Song Lim top the ranking in Group D ahead of Charles Brown, the sports manager at the Verhoeven Open in the Carom Cafe. Sonny Cho is the leader in the last of five groups of seven players.
Today (Friday) is the last day of the preliminaries: the players for the semi-final groups will be known.
