Milestone for Jaspers: 100 matches over 3 average

ROSMALEN - The sixteen players in the Grand Prix in Rosmalen (Netherlands) start the main tournament today (11.00) and meet each other in the knockout stage. Dick Jaspers will face Therese Klompenhouwer, Martien van der Spoel (winner of the first Grand Prix) meets Wilco van Wijk and Jeffrey Jorissen plays against Harrie van de Ven. Jean Paul de Bruijn, Martien van der Spoel, Dave Christiani and Barry van Beers were the group winners on the second day in the final qualifying round.

Dick Jaspers won his three matches the day before and averaged 2.352. The match against Puck van Aart ended in 40-7 in 13 innings: with the average of 3.076 Jaspers reached a milestone: his centenary match over three average (statistics Bert van Manen). Cees Sprangers, another Dutch statistician, claims that Jaspers played over 115 matches over 3 average.

 Raimond Burgman made a strong impression as well in his group with 2.068 over three matches.

There was a lot of tension in the group with Dave Christiani, Harrie van de Ven and Wim van Cromvoirt, who finished with equal points (4). The averages were decisive. Wim van Cromvoirt, who played an excellent match against Harrie van de Ven (40-14 in 26), therefore missed the qualification. Christiani finished 1.193, Van de Ven 1.175 and Van Cromvoirt 1.064.

Jean Paul de Bruijn was the best day winner with six points and 1.818 ahead of Martien van der Spoel with 1.538 and Barry van Beers in 1.379.
Adrie Demming, Therese Klompenhouwer, Wiljan van den Heuvel and Harrie van de Ven qualified as second in their flights. Barry van Beers and Adrie Demming outplayed Jerry Hermans and Herman van Daalen in their group. Kay de Zwart and Bert van Manen were eliminated by Jean Paul de Bruijn and Wiljan van den Heuvel.

De Bruijn was superior in his matches against De Zwart (40-26), Van den Heuvel (40-22) and Bert van Manen (40-18). Wim van Cromvoirt did in his last match against Harrie van de Ven a desperate attempt to escape. The veteran from Waalwijk had a great start, took a big win, suprassed his opponent in match points, but not on average.

Barry van Beers was twice by far the strongest in his matches against Herman van Daalen and Jerry Hermans and beat Adrie Demming 40-33. Jerry Herman is going for a knee surgery after the tournament, an injury left from his football career.
