Spaniard Jose Maria Mas was one of the stars in the first knock-out stage

ATHENS - Filippos Kasidokostas reached the next round (best 16) with a logical victory, Nikos Polychronopoulos sparkled with a fifteen run, Kostas Papakonstantinou fought a hard battle with one of the qualifyiers (Rammos).

Nikos Chatzipavlis, the organizer of the Barrage Open tournament in Athens, was eliminated by another unseeded player (Bartsokas).

But the Greek player Nikos Trémoulis was the sensation in the sixteenth finals in a wonderful match in which he beat Minaoglu 40-9 in 17 innings (2.353). The Spaniard Jose Maria Mas performed at the same level in his match against Greek Spiros Lianos (40-21 in 17).

Trémoulis and Mas were the star players in this first round of the knockout schedule. The major contenders survived: Kasidokostas defeated Koykis 40-30 in 21, Polychronopoulos won his duel with Oikonomou 40-25 in 26, Papakonstantinou needed penalty shots to outplay Rammos and Adnan Yüksel was the best winner of the Turks in 25 innings.
