Torbjörn Blomdahl sparkled with the BC Deurne team

HALLE-ZOERSEL - The World championship in three cushion in Korea is getting closer and the two best players in the ranking show the world this week that they are in a superb form. Torbjörn Blomdahl sparkled in the Belgian league on Monday night with a huge run of 21, Frédéric Caudron played the best match: 50 caroms in eighteen innings (2.777).

Torbjörn Blomdahl is leaving for Colombia for a week, next Monday, for exhibitions, lessons and lectures about billiards in the country that is suspended by its own federation and the UMB this week. There, in Colombia, he starts his intensive preparation for the World championship, before he made his huge run yesterday, he didn't practice for five days.

The Swedish winner of numerous world championships and World Cups has been hunting in vain for the most coveted title, since 1997 (Grubbenvorst winner for Raimond Bugman and Marco Zanetti). However... he feels no special pressure. ,,I do not think about the years I didn't win the title.''

He'll see how it turns out, like last night in his match against Ronny Lindemann, in which he exploded at 19-17 with a 21 run, missing his 22 by a whisker. His highest so far is 24. ,,That's been a long time ago, I don't know which year, in the Dutch league, Torbjörn said after his match that he won 50-30 in 19 innings.

That was one inning more than Frédéric Caudron did in his match against Frans van Kuyk (with glasses), who could not keep up with the master, but played a good match as well: 50-35 in 18.

De Goeie Queue won 6-2 against Biljart Express and remains unbeaten on top. Dick Jaspers lost the only match for the team against his fellow villager Gerwin Valentijn, from whom he won in the Dutch league on Sunday.

That match, in Holland, had a remarkable course: Valentijn took a big lead, but was (in his own words) disturbed by a lady in the audience who made pictures with a flash. From that moment Gerwin's score stopped and Jaspers could win the match easily.

The roles were reversed on Monday: Gerwin Valentijn played a great match - include a run of fifteen - and defeated Jaspers 50-39 in 25 innings. The other matches were won by De Goeie Queue: Eddy Merckx against Martin Spoormans was 42-39 in 25, Jean Paul de Bruijn defeated Hans van de Paer 42-28 in 36.

Gerwin Valentijn in his match against Dick Jaspers.

Pierre Soumagne and Jef Philipoom played also well above two average on this matchday The Frenchman was the only winner for Zanzibar in the home match against BC Herentals: he defeated Geert Meylemans 42-16 in 20 innings.

Martin Horn and Christian Rudolph defeated Roland Forthomme (50-30 in 27) and Dave Christiani (50-39 in 38), the veteran Leon Smolders bested youngster Kenny Miatton 42-41 in 37.

Davy van Havere showed his great form again and took the full win for BC Deurne against De Ploeg. Jean van Erp continues suffering with his form and was defeated by Dirk Weeremans: 42-36 in 31.

Two teams in the back-line shared the win: Royal Bruges played a draw against Sint Truidense. Bart Leys shone for the home team with a run of 14. He won his match for Brugge, like Patrick Vasseur, who is in an excellent debut in the highest class. Frédéric Mottet and Paul Dumont won for Sint Truiden.

Mr. 100 Lier won the topper in the second division A in Kortrijk 5-3. Raymond Ceulemans and his grandson Bart took the match points, Kurt played a draw against Martin Ravestyn, who made 5 from the equalizer and only Peter Ceulemans lost to Richard Bitalis.
