Turkey with Tasdemir and Cenet to world title

VIERSEN - The Turkish team has succeeded itself as the new title holder at the world championships for teams in Viersen. The tournament last year was won by by Murat Naci Coklu and Adnan Yüksel, this afternoon the A-team of Turkey, with Tayfun Tasdemir and Cenet Lutfi were the best of all after four days of competition on mondial level. The Turks defeated Belgium in the final.

Lütfi Cenet showed again his fighting spirit playing for his country. He defeated Eddy Leppens in the final 3-0 in sets, that's why Eddy Merckx, who led 2-1 against Tayfun Tasdemir, couldn't finish his match at the other table. Cenet grabbed the first set of his match 15-7 in ten innings, then ran quickly to 2-0, led 13-8 in the third set, but still gave Leppens another chance to come back. Te Belgian came up to 13-11, but was to flimsy in the final of the set. He missed an easy shot and then saw Cenet finish in the twefth inning and decide over the match and the title: 15-11.

The second Turkish man in the team, who is developing rapidly in recent years and would like to play in foreign leagues, shone already in the quarterfinal against Javier Palazón and this afternoon in the semi-final against Stefan Galla.

The later champion survived the group stage with with victories over Peru and Vietnam, then left Spain behind (with a 3-1 victory of Tasdemir against Sánchez) and took the semifinal against Holland, where Cenet played for executioner against Burgman.

The Belgian team, the reigning champions of Europe, had reached the quarters by victories over Portugal and Italy. Eddy Merckx got in the semi final as well as the final no chance to win or loose his matches against Dick Jaspers and Tayfun Tasdemir. In the semifinals Leppens decided over the win (against Burgman), in the final over the loss of his country (0-3 against Cenet).

The championship ended with an extended homage in the Festhalle in Viersen where the 25th World Championship for teams was held. The Turkish team won the title for the fourth time, after Coklu and Yüksel last year and Semih Sayginer and Tasdemir in 2003 and 2004.

Jean Claude Dupont, president of UMB, said during the ceremony that the tournament will be played again in Viersen next year.
