Barry van Beers was one of the stars this week in Belgium

SINT NIKLAAS/ROESELARE - The mission of Jean van Erp, in the crowded arena of De Witte Molen in Sint Niklaas seemed almost done. The Dutchman, playing for BC Deurne, was close to a victory over two average in his match against Ad Broeders, like Martin Horn and Barry van Beers did in another match of the third playing day in the Belgian league.

Jean van Erp, the Dutch champion, had an excellent start and was around 2.500 for a long time, but he couldn't maintain the level in the final part of the match. The victory (42-18 in 22 innings) was still good enough for a 1.909, better than his leader Torbjörn Blomdahl. And thanks to the victories from the two players, BC Deurne left the Witte Molen with one match point (4-4).

Martin Horn (Herentals) and Barry van Beers (Op de Meir) both played a 24 inning match (2.083) in the encounter between their teams. The German leader defeated Eddy Leppens by a margin (50-34), the Dutchman had a tough 5-points win over Christian Rudolph (50-45).

De Goeie Queue maintained the maximum score (six out of three) and is the only team on top now after the half misstep of Deurne. The leader came back from the away match against Roeselare with a 8-0 and a 1.437 team average, although Eddy Merckx' win against Cédric Melnytschenko hung by a thread. The Belgian had a better start, but in a difficult part of the match, the young Frenchman turned the tables (44-33 in 23). The end, however, came with a close finish in which Merckx was one carom ahead.

Jean Paul de Bruijn had a sublime stage in his match against Philippe Vandendriessche, whom he left behind 42-19 in 24. Frédéric Caudron found his speed after a 12-9 start in eight and then made a 25 points difference five innings (final score 50-21 in 26). De Goeie Queue plays its next match on Tuesday, October 20th against Biljartvrienden at home in De Salpho.

The intimate back room of De Witte Molen was filled by many billiard lovers, not only to watch the home team (Glenn Hoffman, Francis Forton, Ad Broders and Dirk Weeremans), also to see Torbjörn Blomdahl, the proud number one in the world. With some special guests in the audience (a World championship organizer with great new plans and a former mayor with billiards blood in his veins). Jean van Erp Jean was the man of the evening.

Francis Forton has been in a great form for a couple of weeks now, though he calls it ,,just a slightly better form.'' That progression he showed in a part of the match against Jef Philipoom, which he won unthreatened. His opponent was a bit unlucky, played some shots without control and only broke the slump with a run of nine when it was too late (50-40 in 38).

Torbjörn Blomdahl missed his dreaded, quick start against Genn Hofman: the Swede found his rhythm just before the break with a run of ten. Then, still not at full speed, he finished it off 50-37 in 28. Dirk Weeremans gradually gets used to the tables in the room of his new team. He beat Davy van Havere (42-34 in 38) and was one of the two winners in his team: 4-4.

Roland Forthomme (Zanzibar) was never in trouble to deal with Jaak Wijnen (De Ploeg 1 and won 50-33 in 37. Dave Christiani finished just before Mathy Monnissen (50-47 in 47) and Kenny Miatton was the third winner for Zanzibar. The team is, like Deurne, just one point behind the leader.
Three teams are within reach with four match points. Mr. 100 took the full profit against De Ploeg 2 (6-2), however the man of the match played in the team of the opponent: Eddy Willems Jr. defeated Kurt Ceulemans 50-24 in 28.

Frans van Kuyk (Biljart Express) was defeated by Raimond Burgman in the encounter with Biljartvrienden (50-47 in 26). The other match points went to Biljart Express, partly because Gerwin Valentijn bested his Dutch teammate John Tijssens 50-44 in 29 innings. Hans van der Wurf ended his calvary with nine caroms on the scoreboard in 49 innings.
