European junior champion Antonio Montes launched the tournament with 1.500 average

PORTO - The opening day of the World Cup in Porto was not just a Portuguese battle: the ranking after the first rounds of preliminaries was already very international with Antonio Montes (Spain), In-Won Kang (Korea), Duc Anh Chien Nguyen (Vietnam), Jim Anneveldt (Netherlands) and 16-year old Myung Woo Cho in the top five. Four Portuguese players finished in the top sixteen and advanced for the next round.

Today (Tuesday) the field will get a quality injection with a few young talented players like Juan David Zapata, David Martinez, the strong Belgian Francis Forton, two high estimated Koreans and tournament director Alipio Jorge.

The European junior champion Antonio Montes was the strongest on the first day of qualifications with an overall average of 1.500, ahead of the Korean In-Won Kang 1.363.

The other Korean in the top five, Myung Woo Cho, is one of the great talents. He finished on the stage of the Junior World championships last year and plays the World championship in Sluiskil next week, together with Antonio Montes.

The tournament is played in a beautiful hall with eight tables and comfortable stands. The best matches on the first day: Antonio Montes, who won in 19 and 21 innings, Myung Woo Cho, in 21 innings against Esteve Mata. The highest run of twelve was made by Pedro Pais, Myung Woo Cho made a ten-run.

The strongest group for day two is reserved for Antonio Montes, who meets his countryman Raul Cuenca and Korean Chi Yeon Cho. Alipio Jorge faces In-Won Kang, who previously played in the Dutch and German league and was Eddy Merckx' opponent in 2011 when the Belgian played his world record with 50 points in six innings.

Jim Anneveldt is in the group with Ronald Geyt, Myung Woo Cho faces David Martinez and Joël Switala, Juan David Zapata plays against Ra Hee Kim.

Paolo Andrade, the nice and friendly Portuguese, is divided in a group with Mohsen Hamed, Karina Jetten, Europe's second best woman after Therese Klompenhouwer, enters the ring with Gungor Bastunali and Joao Gomes, Mehmet Yavas meets Daniel Pena and Young Chull Kim. Francis Forton plays against Manuel Santos Oliveira.

The matches start at 11.00 Portuguese time and are broadcast live and for free on Kozoom. From tomorrow (Wednesday) a Premium pass is required.
