Eddy Leppens opened the door for Belgium to the finals.

VIERSEN - The final is gonna be a battle between two great countries in three cushion. The current European champion plays against the former European titleholder. Belgium, with Eddy Merckx and Eddy Leppens, meets Turkey, with Tayfun Tasdemir and Lütfi Cenet play for the world title later this afternoon in Viersen. The Belgians beat the Netherlands in the semis, Turkey defeated thanks to Lütfi Cenet the organizing country Germany.

Eddy Leppens showed himself the killer for Belgium. The number two of the world championship last year awarded Raimond Burgman of the Netherlands no set (3-0), therefore Dick Jaspers, one of the stars of the tournament, couldn't give his country a place in the final despite a lead of 2-1 against Eddy Merckx.

The same happened in the encounter between Germany and Turkey, although the tension was a lot bigger in that match. The executioner was Lütfi Cenet, who could see on the other table that the battle between Martin Horn and Tayfun Tasdemir was going up to a 2-2 score. Cenet the victory for his country in his hands and did what he had to do. He defeated Stefan Galla in the final set 15-8 in seven innings, which brought the match to a 3-1 win.

The two finalists slipped not without any difficulties through the quarterfinals last night. The Turks won two matches, but Cenet had to fight back from a 2-1 disadvantage against Javier Palazón. Tayfun Tasdemir didn't seem to have any problems with Dani Sánchez, the worldchampion, who wasn't in a great form after his adventure in Japan (3-1).

Eddy Merckx won 3-1 for Belgium (2.090 average) against Kyung-Roul Kim, but Chung Bok Lee shone against Eddy Leppens with a 3-1 win and 2.041 avergage. So the Belgians needed a little luck to reach the semi finals.

The other two quarter finals were between the Netherlands and Sweden and Ddnmark and Germany. The Netherlands triumphed thanks to a 3-1 win of Dick Jaspers against Torbjörn Blomdahl. Germany defeated Denmark, despite an exceptionally strong performance of Tonny Carlsen, the experienced Danish player who beat Stefan Galla 3-2 with 2.481 average, the highest in the quarter finals. The Danes, nevertheless, were eliminated because Dion Nelin lost 3-1 against Martin Horn.
