LOMMEL – Frédéric Caudron’s leading role was predictable (2.105 over three matches), the number two for qualification to the quarterfinals was more or less surprising. Steven van Acker, announced as ,,the coming man’’ by the colorful speaker Kurt Ceulemans, will accompany the winner of the group to next round.
The Eeklo born player, who became Belgian team champion with Dick Jaspers, Eddy Merckx, Jean Paul de Bruijn and Davy van Havere with the BC Deurne team, earned his ticket in the crucial group match. He beat Davy van Havere 40-34 in 36 innings.
When Frédéric Caudron had already qualified after two matches, Van Acker needed a second match against Frank de Groof. He finally managed very easy, with a big margin throughout the entire match: 40-19 in 26 innings.
Frédéric Caudron was by far and very convincingly the best man in this second day group with victories over Frank de Groof (40-9 in 19), Steven van Acker (40-17 in 22) and finally 40-11 (16 innings) in his last match against Davy van Havere.
That was the best match of the first day, which brought Caudron’s average to 2.105. Steven van Acker was at his best in the deciding match of the group, Davy van Havere disappointed again. The former Belgian cup holder (2012) has so far never approached the level of that tournament, in which he defeated Eddy Merckx in the final.
Frank de Groof showed from time to time that he was not accidental finalist in the tournament in the BTS in the Mr. 100. He could play the final match against Eddy Merckx because Frédéric Caudron played a balk-line tournament in France in that weekend.
The first round of the Superprestige yielded four quarter finalists: Frédéric Caudron, Roland Forthomme, Peter De Backer and Steven van Acker.
