Martin Bohac after his victory against Dani Sánchez

BRANDENBURG AN DER HAVEL - The Spanish triple world champion Dani Sánchez is the first of the heavyweights who did not survive the first round at the European championship. He was eliminated by the 37 year old Czech scientist Martin Bohac, who kept a cool head in the final stage of the match: 40-39 in 28 innings.

Martin Bohac, who lives in Brno and is the six times champion of his country, is not stranger in the three cushion circuit, but not the player of whom may be expected that he can kill the big stars at the major championships. ,,I've been lucky’’, he sighed after his winning carom against Sánchez. The Spaniard came back in his last inning, with a five-run, but then he missed his last carom.

Under high pressure, in a deathly silence, Bohac closed the match with his winning caroms. He said after the game that he even did not look at the schedule before he started. ,,I never expected to beat this championship’’, he said. That opponent in the next round is Jérémy Bury, who defeated the German Andreas Niehaus 40-36 in 28.

Marco Zanetti was the best winner in the first session with 16 of the remaining 32 players. The Austrian Andreas Kronlachner, who slipped through the preliminaries on Friday, was knocked down by the Italian 40-6 in 12 innings.

Frédéric Caudron had already finished against the Czech Miroslav Baca when the most matches were not even on the halfway point: Caudron won 40-14 in 13.

Much tension was seen at the tables of Jean Reverchon against Murat Naci Coklu, where the Frenchman finished with five (40-36 in 37) and between Adnan Yüksel and Ruben Legazpi. The second Spaniard in this round was eliminated: Yüksel won 40-37 in 26.

Nikos Polychronopoulos, as always a speedy starter, sent Lütfi Cenet back to Turkey: 40-23 in 22.

Marco Zanetti the best winner in the first session: 40-6 in 12
