MEDELIN – The World Cup cycle, which started off in Antalya, Turkey this year, will be extended with a fifth organization, together with Guri (Korea), Peloponnese (Greece) and Hurghada (Egypt). Jean Claude Dupont, president of the World federation, was talking about the new tournament during the World Games in Cali and is pleased to announce the new event, which will take place from 3 to 9 November this year.
,,I was negotiating indeed since three weeks with the CPB (American confederation) and the Colombian federation about the new World Cup. We approved the contract last week in Calia. We are talking about a four years contract. The organizer, however, wanted to launch the tournament on this year’s calendar.’’
,,The new World Cup organization is hosting in Medelin'', Dupont says. ,,We are just waiting for one important detail, a guarantee from the Colombian federation, to avoid - as we experienced in Mexico two years ago – an uncertain adventure.
The organization in Mexico was canceled two years ago due to terrorist threats. ,,We are hopeful and expect the guarantee in the upcoming weeks. Once we have the assurance, the event will be announced officially on the calendar.''
The week from 2 until 9 November was already provisionally reserved on the UMB calendar for a World Cup organizer. ,,We made the reservation for federations to be able to adjust the event on their national calendars.’’
Jean Claude Dupont and his organization have been looking for years for an organization in South America. The UMB thinks it’s important to spread the World Cups, at least over Europe, Asia and South America. Since 2008 (Irapuato, Mexico) there were no World Cup organizations on the calendar in the CPB confederation.
Colombia is not only one of the major countries in three-cushion billiards, also in organizational matters, the South American country is very famous. In Colombia, in recent weeks, the World Games were held with 3000 athletes.
Dick Jaspers won the 2008 World Cup final on American ground in Irapuato, Mexico. The Dutchman defeated Dani Sánchez in the final after having defeated Caudron in the semifinal. Sánchez reached the final by a win against Zanetti.
The extension to five World Cups also means that there will be an overall winner of the World Cup cycle this year. For ten years the World champion and the World Cup winner battled for the Super Cup in Antwerp, organized by Ludo Dielis.
