BIRMINGHAM - At the Olympiad for billiard players, the 11th World Games in Alabama, two well known faces from Dutch billiards will be in the spotlights next week (13-17 July). Dick Jaspers (56), the world champion in three-cushion billiards, is the player for the Netherlands and will be hunting for the title. Paul Brekelmans (60) has been chosen as referee in the tournament. He travels tomorrow (Sunday), together with Jaspers, who recovered from Corona, to Birmingham in Alabama for a ten-day stay in the 200.000-people American city, where some 3500 athletes gather for the World Games in sports that are not admitted to the real Olympics.

Dick Jaspers, one of the many Dutch sportsmen, is participating for the sixth time (he won once) in the World Games and was a participant in all editions where billiards was one of the disciplines. The other Brabant inhabitant, Paul Brekelmans, is for the second time a billiard referee at the World Games after his debut in Wroclaw, Poland. The opening ceremony has been held with the Dutch delegation in various sports. Dick Jaspers and Paul Brekelmans will arrive later, because the three-cushion tournament, that will be played in the Sheraton hotel, only starts on Wednesday and ends on Sunday.

Dick Jaspers is chasing the title in these World Games, where sixteen of the best billiard players from all over the world are at the start. ''We also hope to see some of the other sports, but they are in stadiums, we play our matches in the Sheraton hotel.'' Paul Brekelmans: ''Moreover, we have a busy schedule. We arrive in the hotel for the matches at ten o'clock in the morning, the matches are often until ten o'clock in the evening. So we have little time to visit the stadiums where other sports are being held.''

Paul Brekelmans has been invited as referee together with the Frenchman Hervé Lacombe, also a world referee. The two of them will referee all 16 matches of the World Games. The event is organized for billiard players in three cushion, pool and snooker. ''We are one big billiard family there, with the three-cushion event competing for a gold, silver and bronze medal.''

The Dutch, also with a strong delegation in korfball, will in the coming days look for the 40th gold medal in history. Paul Brekelmans: ''I remember from the World Games in Poland that there was a lot of public for billiards. That often depends on the participation: if there are many athletes from the organizing country, there will be a lot of spectators.''

The billiard players show up for four matches a day, the system is knockout. Dick Jaspers starts against American Pedro Piedrabuena, the winner goes to the best eight, the loser is immediately eliminated. The semi-finals are next Saturday at 9.00 am (16.00 West European time), the final is Sunday at 10.00 am (17.00 West European time).

Dick Jaspers returned from the European Cup in Porto last week and tested positive for Corona. That's why the world champion had to cancel the Grand Prix that will be played in Capelle aan den IJssel. Jaspers is free of complaints now and can travel next Sunday. He is facing a touch schedule: in case of a win against Piedrabuena, Jaspers can already face Martin Horn or Torbjörn Blomdahl, and in case of another win, Dani Sánchez or Eddy Merckx.
