Peter De Backer, good to be back on the boards of the Red Sea, again in a shining role

SHARM EL SHEIKH - The World Cups near to the Red Sea have a special appeal to the Belgian player Peter De Backer. The sun, the sea and the beach in combination with billiards at the highest level, often attract the 52-year-old all-round billiard player to the Egyptian resorts at the end of the year. He once played the final against Dani Sánchez (2006) and was on stage when Sánchez won again (2008). Almost out of the blue, but in Sharm El Sheikh now, De Backer has grown into a leading role again this weekend. He was the number two in a group with three top Koreans and today, Friday, faces the strong Vietnamese Quyet Chien Tran.

He is considered an outsider, the number 126 on the world ranking: a darke horse that can be dangerous for all the top guns, as he showed this Thursday against Jae-Ho Cho (40-34 in 21) and HaengJik Kim (40-37 in 24 ), two of the best Koreans. De Backer only lost to Sung-Won Choi, the man with the highest average in the field of 32 players in the main drawe (2,666) and who beat the Belgian 40-36 in 17.

''I have a wonderful holiday, all what I run into now, is a bonus'', Peter De Backer said, starting today on the penultimate day with 16 final players. And between billiards, the Belgian likes to sunbathe with his girlfriend Judit on the banks of the Red Sea. "To combine the pleasant with the useful. I am preparing for the match against Tran, whom I beat in the World Cup in Blankenberge this year.'' The Belgian, who has been playing with glasses for one month now, feels perfect at the table. ''The Dutch billiard player Dion Bergmans has tailor-made special glasses. I should have done it long time before, because now I can see the balls clearly now.''

The six players who achieved the maximum win in the eight groups of four were Sung-Won Choi (6 points, 2,666, series 18), Marco Zanetti (6 points, 2,500, series 15), Jung-Han Heo (6, 1,935 ), Martin Horn (6-1.739), Myung-Woo Cho (6 points, 1.666) and Quyet Chien Tran (6-1.666).

The man of the day was undoubtedly the only Korean individual world champion, Sung-Won Choi, with an impressive average, 2,667 in the group with Peter De Backer, Jae-Ho Cho and HaengJik Kim. The group average: 2.033!

Myung-Woo Cho won the match of two world champions against Dick Jaspers 40-37 in 21, making him the group winner ahead of the Dutchman. Marco Zanetti shone with two runs of 15 and was the magnificent group winner with 2,400. The Wednesday's star, Vietnamese Dinh Nai Ngo with over 3 on average, was eliminated, after a loss to Egyptian Riad Nady.

In the most fascinating group, Juntae Kim, the double lucky loser from the pre-rounds, was the winner with 4 match points followed by Murat Naci Coklu with 3, Michael Nilsson with 3 and Sameh Sidhom with 2.
