The man with the sudden highlights in his career beat Eddy Merckx with a spectacular score. The endrush of Forthomme was impressive, with runs of 12, 10, 4, 11, 0 and 6 in the last six innings. He left Merckx far behind with that final: 50-26 in 11 innings.
For Forthomme it was the second time in his career that he played such a superb match against a world top player. On October 31, 2004, when Forthomme was playing for Ockenburgh in Goes, he defeated Torbjorn Blomdahl 50-6 in eleven innings and a run of fourteen.
The match between Forthomme and Merckx was the highlight of the evening at Zanzibar, where Therese Klompenhouwer beat Paul Stroobants 42-37 in 33 innings and Davy Havere defeated Jimmy Mues 42-27 in 29.
