Scotch Double launches Five&Six cycle in Korea

The total field of players for the Five&Six events in Korea

WONJU - The cycle of three UMB invitational tournaments organized by Five&Six in Korea started today (Thursday) with a Scotch Double tournament with 32 players. The participants will play in pairs over three days (1-3 July) a so-called 'Shoot-out' tournament, in which two groups of eight pairs play a full competition. The format is Round Robin (all pairs against each other), the matches last 20 minutes. The best four pairs of each group qualify for a play-off with 2 times 4 teams, the winners of the groups qualify for the final.

The pairs are drawn by lot. Only the four ladies in the tournament play with each other: Therese Klompenhouwer with Ji-eun Han, Gülsen Degener with Jin-ah Kim. The ladies pairs start with three points ahead in the matches against the men. Therese Klompenhouwer started the tournament with Han with a win against Semih Sayginer and Choong-Bok Lee (19-10 in 14 innings), but lost the second against Haeng-Jik Kim and Roland Forthomme 17-18 in 15 innings.

Eddy Merckx, playing with Quyet Chien Tran, started the tournament with two victories. In the first match the ladies Degener/Kim were defeated 26-10, in the second game Merckx/Tran won against Sameh Sidhom/Dong Hoon Kim 24-7 in 11 innings.

Dick Jaspers, who is paired with the Korean Jung-Han Heo, played a draw in the first match against Choi/Kang 13-13 in 11 innings. The world champion Torbjörn Blomdahl lost the first match with Seo against Sameh Sidhom/Dong Hoon Kim: 25-7 in 11. Dani Sánchez also started with Choi with a loss against Dion Nelin and Jun Tae Kim.

Murat Naci Coklu was one of the best winners in the first sessions. The Turkish player was paired with Korean wildcard player Myeong-jong Cha. They defeated Tayfun Tasdemir/Nguyen Quoc Nguyen 18-14 in 8 innings.

The tournament ends on Saturday with the play-offs, followed on Sunday (4 July) by a one-day tournament with 15 selected players in the run-up to the main tournament, the World 3Cushion Grand Prix. The matches are played at Hotel Inter Burgo in Wonju.
