Semih Sayginer, a late wake up and a narrow escape

GURI – The clock already over eleven, the World Cup in Guri had started its second day and where was Semih Sayginer…? The Turkish spectacle man was still nowhere to be seen and was supposed to be at the table for his match against his countryman Yavuz Güngördü. Waiting, waiting another while and then, finally... There he entered the room.

The excuse? There was a fall off of the electricity in his hotel room, so he missed the alarm clock and his phone to be warned. Too late for the wake up.

But anyway, the organization luckily showed its mercy and his opponent agreed, so Sayginer could start his party. The match itself was in balance until the end, then Sayginer escaped to victory: 30-28 in 19 innings. And because Güngördu won his match against Japanese Takashi Sannakanishi easily (30-5 in 18), Semih could reach the next round with a very nice win over Sannakanashi, 30-8 in 13 with a 9-run in the tenth inning.

At the same time was the showdown in Group B, which was considered to be the best on the second day. Haeng Jik Kim, the four-time junior world champion, started with the match against another strong Korean, Tae Soo Lim. He won 30-11 in 14 and defeated Belgian player Vincent Eugene in his second 30-14 in 13.

Allan Jensen had a very poor start in his first match, when he lost to Sang Pil Um (30-9 in 16): he’s therefore as good as out. Japanese lady Namiko Hayashi, who was on the stage at the World Championships for women two years ago, doesn’t have to return after her losses 30-7 (17) vs Heung Sik Park and 30-24 (45) against Tapio Soinisalo.

Kwang Yeol Park was the best in the first rounds of the second day with a victory in twelve innings. Myung Woo Cho, the number two of the recent Junior World championships in Sluiskil, started with a win (Mehmet Yavas) and a loss (against Hao Quang Truong) and has to wait the result of the final group match.

Twelve flights of three battle for twelve places in the next round.
