Spanish title goes to Paiporta after thrilling finish

The champion team Paiporta for the second year in a row

PAIPORTA - The Spanish team title is won by the team Paiporta for the second time in a row. The champion team took two wins in the last weekend and played in the strongest line-up with Javier Palazón, Sergio Jiménez, Xavier Yeste, Francisco Unguetti and Jorge Cantó. The champion finished with 31 points out of 20 matches, one point ahead of Mostóles with Ruben Legazpi as its star player. Third was Chef Amadeo Gandi with Peter Ceulemans as its captain and Gwendal Maréchal in the line-up.

Adrian Legazpi, playing for Mostóles, was the best player in the league with 33 points, just ahead of Peter Ceulemans with 31. The Belgian played all his matches with an average of 1,497. Third in the individual ranking was Sergio Jiménez of Paiporta.

The highest averages came from Ruben Legazpi (1,550) and David Zapata with 1,532 ahead of Peter Ceulemans (1,497) and Sergio Jiménez with 1,485. Palazón finished with 1,470, Maréchal with 1,419, David Martinez with 1,406.

The champion Paiporta lost a big lead in the penultimate round, but victories over Madrid (8-0) and Vic (6-2) in the last weekend allowed them to capture the title after all.

CB Ateneo and CB Vic are relegated from the top division.

Móstoles came second with Rubén Legazpi, José María Más, Alfonso Legazpi and Adrián Legazpi, a quartet that played 79 of 80 league games. The Legazpi trio and 'Mía' form an extraordinary quartet that has been on a title chase in the last few seasons.

The number three, Gandía, played this season with Peter Ceulemans, Gwendal Maréchal, José Luis Pascual, Alberto Sintas and Francisco Estruch.
