BAD WILDUNGEN - Dieter Steinberger, playing for BC Kempten, is the surprising winner of the German championship one cushion, in a spectacular final match against Marküs Dömer. The other big favorite for the title, Wolfgang Zenkner, was beaten in the semifinal by Steinberger.
The German specialist Zenkner could not live up to his role as super favorite. The former world- and European champion was the best by far in the preliminary rounds with three winning matches and 10.34 average. He stumbled over the later champion in the semifinals 100-79 in 14 innings.
Markus Dömer won the other semi-final against Carsten Lässig in a fascinating battle: 100-96 in 22 innings. The final came down to a great Steinberger show: in only six innings the Kemptenaar outplayed Dömer 100-9.
Two-time European champion Thomas Nockerman, playing for DBC Bochum, took the title in the balk-line 71/2 with a final victory over Wolfgang Zenkner: 150-63 in four innings. In the semifinals Nockerman defeated Markus Melerski in 7 innings: 150-104.
Triple finalist Sven Daske was in the other semifinal beaten by Zenkner (150-86 in 4), Zenkner scored in this match the highest tournament run: 134.
Sven Daske won the title in free game and later in the balk-line 47/2. In the final he defeated his great rival Thomas Nockerman 200-122 in three innings. Daske recorded the best tournament average: 35.71.
