Swiss team: a top gun and a snail's pace

VIERSEN - The Swiss team made a very remarkable start at the World team championship in Viersen. Rene Hendriksen was on of the big guns with 30 caroms in 11 innings at the opening day. The Swiss team played against Luxembourg.

His compatriot and teammate Torsten Danielsson performed very poor at the other table. The Swiss number two gathered his caroms at a snail's pace and looked like a man beating a dead horse. The match turned out in a mockery: The Luxemburger Bryan Templers closed the game in 56 innings. Danielsson was at 21, but finally made a run of five: 30-26.

Rene Hendriksen defeated Ramon Hamm 30-9 in an excellent match. Tonny Carlsen topped his opponent Jérémy Bury with a match at the same level (30-14 in 11) on this first day. The French team, reigning European champion, were send home. Jérôme Barbeillon lost two matches: against Thomas Andersen and earlier on the day against Barry van Beers of Netherlands B.

Jérémy Bury won his match vs. Jean Paul de Bruijn (30-22 in 24), but the French were outplayed by the Danes in there second match of the day.

Turkey started with a 3-1 victory over Germany B, the home team tied in his first match against Vietnam. Murat Naci Coklu beat Markus Dömer (30-25), Ronny Lindemann and Tayfun Tasdemir closed their match at 30-30 in 19 innings.

Japan defeated Belgium B 4-0 and will face Netherlands A tomorrow.

Austria was the better in the duel with Ecuador 4-0 and Egypt defeated the Czech Republic 4-0. Venezuela shone with a draw against the Portuguese thanks to an excellent Miguel Carton, who defeated the young Joao Ferreira with a final run of 9 and 30-14 in 17 innings.
