Thomas Broux couldn't stop good old Martin Spoormans in his debut match.

BLANKENBERGE - The preparation of Thomas Broux, this morning before his match against Martin Spoormans, was not the very best. The young Liege player (23), with Bart Ceulemans, Kenny Miatton and Marco Janssen the youngest players of the Multi's, had to swallow a bitter pill in his defeat against the veteran in the second session of the day (3-0).

He was disappointed, of course, but he knew there was not so much hope for a stunt on beforehand. ,,I know that Martin feels at home on these tables (Verhoeven), I myself never play on it, so I had too much trouble to adjust,'' said Broux after the game.

Thomas Broux, who started playing billiard with his father at the age of ten, is seen as one of the talents in Belgium. The road to top is long, he knows, moreover he has given priority to his study communications in recent years. ,,I want to become a journalist, I write some small things for a Liège newspaper for the time being and for the website of the VES, the players organization in Belgium.''

The Belgian player Pol Stroobants is his teacher and occasionally he gets some tips from Roland Forthomme. ,,I could learn a lot more from Roland, but he's travelling so much for billiards, that we meet each other very little.''

This morning Thomas Broux had an examination in Liege at eight o'clock, that's why his match against Martin Spoormans had to be moved from the first session to the second séance. It may not be an excuse, but obviously it was not the ideal preparation: first his exam, then rapidly in the car for his debut in the Belgian championship.

Three sets only took his match against Spoormans: 15-9, 15-8, 15-10 (averages 1.216/0.771). ,,It's not a match to be happy with, but actually I came here for my pleasure, because I knew it wouldn't be normal if I should Martin.''

Meanwhile, Eddy is Leppens keeps on winning in the tournament, now in his match agains Philippe Deraes. His three cushion match this morning was promising, this afternoon he also won the 47/1 game against Deraes in an excellent performing: 200-144 in six innings.

The first days of the Multi's have learned that he may be the main challenger of Caudron in the classic games. Tomorrow is the first confrontation between the two: Caudron-Leppens in 47/1 is on the program for 14.00.

Tonight, the match between Wesley de Jaeger and Koen Ceulemans has been cancelled. Ceulemans has told the organization that he cannot play because of his business.
