Iwan Stitchinsky won his first match in three cushion against Thomas B roux.

BLANKENBERGE - For 24 billiard players, divided into eight groups, the battle for a place in the knock-out phase of three cushion will get the showdown in the next rounds. Kurt Ceulemans was the first who won his group in the preliminaries and is qualified for the main event with sixteen players.

Marco Janssen and Iwan Stitschinsky started off today (Tuesday) with victories over Tom Persyn (40-38 in 37) and Thomas Broux (40-32 in 42). Today, also Martin Spoormans and Peter De Backer will try to make a good start.

They are not the big guns on day three: Frédéric Caudron provided one of the highlights again with his perfect demonstration in the balk-line 71/2 against Martin Ravestyn: 250-29 in three run with a starting run of 208. The undisguised class dripped again from the wonderful playing style of the champion on and around the lines.

There were some 'oops' and 'awws' to see on the Kozoom chat, from well known balk-lines players, when Caudron seemed to lose his good position for a while. But every time, the maestro could repare in one ore two 'rappels' and collect the balls in the perfect position again.

The followers of the game, for many years, will, agree: Caudron plays the game differently - of course - then former champions, like the longhaired German Dieter Müller, an absolute specialist in the 71/2, but his generation Caudron is by far the best of all the classic players.

Tonight he will show up one more time, for his match in one cushion against Francis Forton.

Peter De Backer has started the tournament with a loss in the 47/1 against Patrick Niessen (200-177 in 11) and with a victory over Eddy Leppens in the 47/1: 200-169.
