Two star players on day one: Montes and Karakurt

Turkish player Berkay Karakurt had a flying start at the European championship

ZEVENBERGEN - Antonio Montes from Spain and Berkay Karakurt from Turkey have launched the European junior championship with a great performance. Both players stole the show in the first session of the tournament, which is played in Zevenbergen, Netherlands.

Both Montes and Karakurt are playing in Group D and started off with tremendous matches: 25 caroms in 11 innings, making 2.272 average.
Berkay Karakurt is the younger brother of European champion Ömer Karakurt, who has passed the age limit and is not allowed to play as a junior anymore. Antonio Montes, who was an excellent free game player as a junior, has focused on three cushion now.

Karakurt defeated Czech Adam Kozak in his first match 25-10. The Dutchman in this group, Michael Vink, went down without a fight and lost 25-6.

The other winners in the groups couldn't match at all with averages of both fixtures, although the other Spaniard, Sergio Aparicio, made a strong attack out of the blocks in his duel with Tobias Schramm. He defeated his German opponent 25-19 in 19.

Belgian Andy Bond showed up with one average in his first appearance and leads the group ahead of Alexis Rouaud.

The other Frenchman, Adrien Tachoire, bested Luxembourger Saud Muhović 25-11 in 29 in his first game. In this group, Belgian Wesley van Apers won his match aainst Patrick Butora 25-20 in 36 innings.

Portuguese Joao Ferreira was miles ahead in his match against Jordy de Kruijf. The Dutch champion delivered a great fight and came back in the match within two innings (11 caroms): the result was a draw 25-25 in 39.
