PORTO - De World Cup in Porto, het eerste mondiale evenement na de zomer op de kalender van de UMB, is vanmorgen (maandag) van start gegaan met de eerste voorronden en eindigt volgende zondag. Zeven dagen van driebanden op het hoogste niveau kan worden gevolgd op Kozoom, de eerste twee dagen gratis, daarna voor Premium pas abonnees.
De terugkeer van Semih Sayginer op het internationale podium is één van de opvallendste feiten. Hij profiteert van de wildcard van de organisatie en zal vrijdag in het hoofdtoernooi zijn opwachting maken.
Onder de deelnemers op de eerste dag zijn de jonge Koreaan Myung Woo Cho en de Europese kampioen bij de junioren, de Spanjaard Antonio Montes, die beide volgende week het WK in Sluiskil spelen. Verder de Spanjaard Esteve Mata, de Nederlanders Raymon Groot en Jim Anneveldt en de Turk Murat Cevikbas.
De opvallendste spelers op de tweede dag zijn Raul Cuenca, de Spaanse kaderspecialist, Alipio Jorge, de organisator namens FC Porto, de sterke Spaanse jonge spelers David Martinez en David Zapata, Young Chull Kim, Hyun Min Seo, Francis Forton, Ra Hee Kim, Manuel Santos Oliveira, Mehmet Yavas, de Nederlandse Karina Jetten, Sergio Jimenez en Ronald van Geyt.
De derde dag krijgt nog meer topspelers in de arena met onder andere Jose Maria Mas, Murat Tüzül, Jérôme Barbeillon, Quoc Nguyen Nguyen Alfonso Legazpi, Ahmet Alp, Xuan Cuong Ma, Ly The Vinh, Jean Reverchon, Birol Uymaz, Riad Nady, Jean-Christophe Roux, Peter Ceulemans, Lim Tae Soo, Kostas Papakonstantinou, Therese Klompenhouwer, Pierre Soumagne, Mehmet Gören Apostolos Balogiannis en Jef Philipoom.

The sixteen players who are seeded directly are Frédéric Caudron, Torbjörn Blomdahl, Filippos Kasidokostas, Eddy Merckx, Dick Jaspers, Marco Zanetti, Sung-Won Choi, Kyung-Roul Kim, Jérémy Bury, Jae Ho Cho, Dong Koong Kang and Tayfun Tasdemir, added by the wildcards Ramon Rodriguez, Ryuji Umeda, Semih Sayginer and Joao Pedro Ferreira.
